Who We Are
Larry and I live in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, just an hour and a half from the Canadian border. You can see Vermont from our house. We have 2 daughters, Emily and Eleanor, three dogs and 2 cats. We love life in the country where we can play all year round. We boat, hike, snowshoe, swim, hunt and fish – who’d have thought ice fishing is a blast? The Adirondack Park is the largest park in the country and everywhere you turn, there are mountains, lakes, ponds and streams.
Raising two girls keeps us busy. Besides playing outdoors, we love restoring our old farmhouse, playing with the dogs and the cats, visiting our families, meeting and making new friends, and working for ourselves instead of a boss.
We both spent almost two decades working in the energy efficiency and conservation field – that’s how we met. We loved being in careers where we had new challenges every day and got to help people by working on homes that were uncomfortable, unhealthy or just too darned expensive to operate. Larry still helps fix homes in his contracting business.
We’re using the skills we learned from our energy efficiency work as a jumping off point, as Uptown Av helps us continue to grow as individuals and as leaders in our new business. Now, instead of helping people be comfortable, save money and live in safer homes, we’re helping our customers get the nutrition they need to stay healthy and helping people interested in starting their own alternative venture meet their financial goals.
Why Uptown Av?
I joined Uptown Av because I want to work from home for a company that makes me smile, something that Uptown seems to do every single day. I love the people! They’re funny and smart and so much fun to work with.
Larry and I both had great careers in the energy efficiency industry. But although we loved our jobs and were paid very well, we were never sure if our jobs would make it through the next budget cuts. We love living in the mountains and didn’t want to be forced to move somewhere else because a job demanded it. So we were looking for something to add some financial stability to our lives and that would allow us to work from home, without the threat of having to move. We started businesses in our old field with that in mind, but I was still looking for something more.
Since our daughters Emily and Eleanor were born, it’s even more important to us that we work from home and can be there to see them grow up. We love the freedom of setting our own schedule, without having to check with a boss when we want to visit our family or take a day off to enjoy a fresh snowfall.
My Checkered Food Past
I was looking for a company with a product I could really get behind. I found it in this one. I grew up eating a pretty standard American diet of Fruit Loops for breakfast, baloney sandwiches and potato chips in my lunch box and tuna casserole or an occasional round steak (well done – too bad!) for dinner. My family always had a beautiful garden, but I never liked much that came out of it. My mom said the only vegetables I ever liked were baked beans and sweet corn. (I loved the strawberries, too!)
As I grew older, left home and started exploring and cooking for myself, I became interested in eating more natural foods. I dropped much of the processed stuff that became so popular beginning in the ‘60s and ‘70s and started cooking from scratch. I do eat more vegetables now, especially since I’ve learned new ways to cook them, but I still rarely get 5, let alone 9, fruits and veggies a day.
Now, with my two girls here, I’m even more conscious of what we eat. We garden and hunt and fish, so much of our food we harvest ourselves. We are lucky to live in an area with good farmers’ markets and natural food stores, so we have access to free-range meat and organic produce. That, and a taxidermist that gives away free bear – seems most people just want the rug, not the meat. And bear is about the best meat I’ve ever tasted, despite it’s bad reputation.
But I was still worried about not getting enough fruits and vegetables in our diets. I mean, if you ate all the stuff the latest research says you need, you’d never stop eating! So when I found a product with all of those fruits and veggies in one place – not to mention digestive enzymes and friendly flora – my eyes lit up. I had to have it. If your eyes lit up, too, we’ll help you in any way we can.
Thanks for your time in looking at our products. I hope they can enhance your life as much they have ours.
Take care. We look forward to hearing from you!
